Polarimetry of Binary Stars

Astronomical polarimetry is a powerful technique that can provide physical information sometimes difficult or impossible to obtain by any other type of observation. Almost every class of binary star can benefit from polarimetric observations: pre-main-sequence objects, close or contact binaries, mass-transfer systems, evolved binaries, cataclysmic variables, eclipsing binaries, etc. In these sy...

A catalogue of symbiotic stars

We present a new catalogue of symbiotic stars. In our list we include 188 symbiotic stars as well as 28 objects suspected of being symbiotic. For each star, we present basic observational material: coordinates, V and K magnitudes, ultraviolet (UV), infrared (IR), X-ray and radio observations. We also list the spectral type of the cool component, the maximum ionization potential observed, refere...

Symbiotic stars in X-rays

Until recently, symbiotic binary systems in which a white dwarf accretes from a red giant were thought to be mainly a soft X-ray population. Here we describe the detection with the X-ray Telescope (XRT) on the Swift satellite of 9 white dwarf symbiotics that were not previously known to be X-ray sources and one that was previously detected as a supersoft X-ray source. The 9 new X-ray detections...

The Henize sample of S stars IV . New symbiotic stars ⋆

The properties of the few symbiotic stars detected among the 66 binary S stars from the Henize sample are discussed. Two stars (Hen 18 and Hen 121) exhibit both a strong blue-violet continuum and strong Hα emission (FWHM of 70 km s ), whereas Hen 134 and 137 exhibit weak Hα emission. The Hα profiles are typical of non-dusty symbiotic stars belonging to class S-3 as defined by Van Winckel et al....

Spectrophotometric study of southern symbiotic stars

We have analyzed the optical spectra of 67 symbiotic stars and objects suspected of being symbiotic, and found 18 new symbiotic systems. This is the largest homogeneous set of optical spectrophotometric data for symbiotic binaries ever studied. We have derived the reddenings and distances for all systems, estimated the IR classes (S and D) for the new systems, and determined the location of the...
